Sphinx on the university riverfront
These are the only real sphinxes from Ancient Egypt in St. Petersburg, they are more than three thousand years old. Years, centuries, millennia were changing, new civilizations died and were born, but time has no power over them. In the 14th century BC, the guarded the sanctuary of Pharaoh Amenhotep III in Thebes. And in 1832, the sphinxes arrived in St. Petersburg. For a whole year they were transported from Alexandria by a ship called the Good Hope. In 1834, they were placed on high pedestals made of granite. And since then they have been a magnificent decoration of the Neva Embankment in St. Petersburg. Their eyes are fixed on infinity, and sometimes it seems that these ancient sphinxes hide some secret from us. After all, they have seen so much in this life…
